Methods of Documentation and Measured Drawings

In this short semester, we only had one module, Methods of Documentation and Measured Drawings, which focused on helping students develop methods of of recording and understanding of the principles of building preservation/conservation through three documentation methods; measured drawings, written documentation and photographic documentation.

In a group of 18, we visited the Royal Selangor Club, the building that was assigned to our group. We  were able to measure the entire building for about a week, while taking photos of the building that we would later on use for our documentations.

Project 1: Onsite Observation Journal and Video

The first project, comprised of a sketch journal and a video. The sketch journal was an individual project. We were required to draw sketches of the Royal Selangor Club, capturing elements from three categories that were given to us; The genius Loci, Cultural attributes and Technical/construction details. We were to select at least 2 of the above categories and capture those elements of the building through our sketches

Video

We were needed to make a 5 minute video so as to provide an in-depth experience of the building. Below is the video that was taken during our one week visit at the Royal Selangor club, showing how we conducted the measurements and telling a story about the club.

Project 2: Report & Photobook

This project was a group assignment. We were required to produce a detailed report that captured the architectural, historical and cultural aspects of the building. Furthermore, we also needed to produce 50 photos of the building that carried a major essence to the building.

Project 3: Measured Drawings and Final Model
As a group, we were required to produce a complete set of detailed drawings of the Royal Selangor Club, based on the on site measurements. Aside, we also had to make a model out of balsa wood through laser cutting technique. The model was to portray the building's details inside out.

REFLECTION

This project was a memorable experience, and an eye opener to doing field work, conducting measurements and documenting on a daily basis for one week. Through guidance from our lecturer, Dr. Suchi, who made the semester more fun for us, we got to learn so much and will sure put to use all the knowledge we acquired out of this.
