Architectural Design Studio 5 is themed "Place-making for the Urban Community". This studio addresses in-depth studies regarding urbanization and how architecture plays an important role in shaping the urban context. The relevance of design solutions to solve urban issues become critical, capturing the essence of a place while adhering to legislative requirements.
Project1: Preliminary Studies
Site Documentation, Site Analysis, and Precedent Studies of Urban Infills and Learning Centre.
In a group, we were required to conduct an in-depth urban study on our site, Jalan Besar and Jalan Stesen 1, in both macro and micro scale.
In the micro study we were to make a comprehensive study on urban form, activity and movement-pattern. ‘Legibility Analysis’ (Bentley, et.al. 2013) which is a method through the exploration of Kevin Lynch’s Elements of legibility (Lynch, 1979). The Precedent Studies aided in providing an insight into architectural responses for designing an urban infill community library.
Micro analysis of the site
Additionally, an individual conclusion was to be made to show representation of a design idea or position or even a scenario.
This is the final project for this module and is a continuation of Project 1, individual component. We were required to design a community library within an urban infill site along Jalan Besar. The design of the building is to consist of appropriate architectural responses that address the aspects of the urban street context and user behavioural patterns as discerned and analysed in the Preliminary Studies.
I learnt to demonstrate the fundamental knowledge of Design Codes and Regulations and at the same time explore plan-to-section and elevational studies to resolving issues during the phases of completing this project. This gave me exposure to developing design to a level for regulatory application, complying to the requirements of local authorities. I was enabled to demonstrate my understanding of cultural, historical and established architectural theories in a creative and innovative manner into architectural design solutions.
