Landscape Architecture

In this module, we began with a site analysis practice. We were given a topic to carry out out site inventory, and then further analyze it thoroughly in helps of producing our final project, which is a design proposal for the proposed site. Our final project is to design an urban park at the proposed site, which is beside a Modern art museum, utilizing the data given in our site analysis, in response to the site conditions, as well as designing a proposal that is appropriate with the art museum and contextually suitable.

Project 1: Site Analysis

In the first project, we had to carry out site analysis in a group of 5. We were given specific topics to study the site inventory, and the topics were macro and micro climate studies, as well as the urban ecology in our proposed site, Brickfields, Kuala Lumpur. We further analyzed these topics, observing and understanding how the climate affects the site, as well as the ecological relationship between the natural elements and habitats co-respond and co-exist with one another in an urban setting.

Project 2: Design Project

In the final individual project, we needed to come out with a design proposal of an urban park, beside the Kuala Lumpur Modern Art Museum, at the proposed site. The design needed to be sensitive to site, in respond to the site conditions and appropriateness, given the consideration of its local community, its existing site, as well as the Modern Art Museum. The design approach I went for is to counter the local community, providing green spaces that caters to the neighboring white collar workers, local communities, as well as visitors that enters the city from the nearby KL sentral. It has a strong opportunity to form impression of the town. Thus, with the given art museum, the incorporation of a resting area partially includes the museum, as well the urban park is a representation of an abstract art sculpture, that not only expresses art forms, but accommodating human lives, including human lives as part of the art.

REFLECTION

This module taught me the vitality of site. The site is relatively important, especially in landscape architecture, as it deals with outdoor spaces in the public realm, accommodating human activities in response to the site conditions. We were given a specific topic during site analysis, which is urban ecology and the climatic studies. Through the practice, the realization and comparison between these topics in a natural environment and in an urban setting is significantly different, and was able to grasps how the ecological aspect and climate conditions play out in cities. It made me realize how landscape architecture has immense potential in improving the livelihood in public realms, as well as living environment that serves the betterment for human congregation and reconnect human and it's cities.
