Architecture Design Studio 2 (ARC60205/ ARC1126)

Project 1: Famous People, Familiar Faces

This project is assigned to groups of five. We were required to investigate and explore how spaces are created from architectural elements. Upon completion of the project, student should be able to achieve a level of understanding on the work assigned and to apply the ideas on their later projects. The idea of use pure and diagrammatic models to express the architectural idea was also incoperated in the assignment. Our group's assigned building was Casa Rotonda by Mario Botta.

Casa Rotonda by Mario Botta

We were to produce a complete set of architectural drawings (scale of 1:100) of the selected masterpiece on A3 size paper. Furthermore, we were required to investigate and formulate our findings into 10 analysis diagrams and 10 diagrammatic models.  Analysis was based on:

  • organisation of form
  • organisation of space
  • circulation and paths
  • space relationship
  • spatial hierarchies
  • context
  • elements

Below is our final submission of the project:

REFLECTION

This project helped me understand that architecture is not just all about designing a building or space. I learnt that there are elements and compositions that make up a well designed space.

Project 2a: Pavilion @ National Botanical Garden Shah Alam

For this assignment, we went to Botanical Garden, Shah Alam to conduct a site analysis of the physical context. Data such as site plan, existing structure, landscape, climatic studies, circulation pattern, vistas and activities were to be included.

Afterwards, the project entailed a pair group assignment of designing a pavilion of your chosen site from the entire site plan.

FINAL SUBMISSION

REFLECTION

In this project, i learnt through the site analysis that it is one of the major factors to consider before designing anything. I also learnt the importance of team work as i worked with my group mate throughout the entire project

Project 2b: Weekend Getaway @ National Botanical Garden Shah Alam

Project 2b extends our understanding of design concept and process. It introduces the notion of architectural space making through the design of a user-specific architectural scheme. The project explores the relationship between architectural tectonics, functions and space. On our own we were to further develop a retreat house to function as a habitable architectural space and enable daily human activities such as cooking, leisure, storage and dining.

I developed a Hiker's Retreat House, following my chosen concept of 'Integration with Nature'

FINAL PRESENTATION

REFLECTION

This was our first time designing a habitable architecture. So it came to me as a learning experience and gaining knowledge of more ways of creating and designing. A huge thanks to my lecturer for guiding me always as per the expected things for the project. I've learnt more than a lot on the layout of a living space. It was quite an experience for me .
